Course Description

Pastoral Care in Everyday Life (MS131) is the first of two complementary modules that introduce students to the foundations, key themes, and practice of pastoral care. This course focuses on helping students understand the basis for pastoral care, develop the skills and posture needed to care well, and grow in awareness, empathy, and practical ability to accompanying others through the ordinary rhythms, transitions, and struggles of daily life.

Through instruction by experienced pastors and practitioners, case studies, interactive learning, and reflection, students will explore the pastoral dimensions of discipleship, learn the interplay between spiritual and emotional needs, develop sensitivity to human suffering, complexity and vulnerability, and learn how to offer Christ-centred care within the life of the Christian community.

The course equips ministry leaders, pastors, and lay caregivers to offer sensitive, informed, and prayerful pastoral support in a wide range of real-life situations.

Key areas participants will explore are:

Introduction to Pastoral Care and Discipleship: The nature, basis, and posture of pastoral ministry in everyday life.

Family Systems and Transitions: Understanding family dynamics, marriage and life transitions, and pastoral responses to conflict or crisis.

Care for the Sick and Vulnerable: Ministering to those who are ill, hospitalised, or living with mental health conditions or disabilities.

Pastoral Care in Matters of Sexuality and Identity: Journeying with those with struggles of identity, desire, and dependence.
