Course Description


This course examines the theology and practice of worship music from biblical times through to the contemporary period. Key moments in Christian church music are found in biblical times, the early Catholic church, the Reformation, congregational hymnody in England and the United States, contemporary Christian music and global music across cultures. Emphasis is given to the role and function of music for teaching, spiritual edification, spiritual formation, beauty and authentic expressions of worship to God.

Dr Tan Sooi Ling

Associate Lecturer

Dr Tan Sooi Ling is the Dean of Asia Graduates School of Theology (AGST) Alliance. She has taught at various seminaries including Fuller Seminary, Palm Beach Atlantic, Florida, Malaysia Baptist Theological Seminary and St Paul’s Theological Seminary. She holds a PhD in Intercultural Studies with a focus on worship at Fuller Theological Seminary, and a postdoctoral fellowship with the Brehm Center exploring the areas of peace and reconciliation through music. She co-edited the book, Uncommon Sounds: Songs of Peace and Reconciliation, and has written various papers one of which is Sounds, Languages and Rhythms: Hybridized Popular Music and Christian-National Identify Formation in Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia.
